Bangu U20

Nine thousand and sixty-four seats sit inside Estádio Proletário Guilherme da Silveira Filho, in the district of Bangu on Rio de Janeiro's west side, though almost nobody calls the ground by that name. Moça Bonita — Pretty Girl — is what stays on people's lips, and it is where Bangu's youth side plays its home matches under the same red-and-white colours as the first team above it.

The club those colours belong to traces back to 1904, when workers at the Bangu textile factory, together with British engineers on site, put a team together. A year later Bangu became the first club in Brazil to field black and mixed-race players in numbers, at a time when the sport elsewhere kept its distance. The nickname that stuck, Time de Fábrica, The Factory Team, still points back to that origin among the mill hands rather than to any boardroom.

Bangu U20 carries none of that trophy weight itself — the senior side's Campeonato Carioca titles from 1933 and 1966, the runner-up finish in the 1985 Campeonato Brasileiro, belong to a different roster in a different era. What the academy does is feed players toward that shirt, competing in the Rio state federation's Sub-20 competitions, the Campeonato Carioca Sub-20 and the Taça Rio Sub-20, on the same Moça Bonita turf and under the same crest.

It is a modest arrangement by the standards of Rio football, one youth setup working out of one stadium that has shrunk from a reported 15,000 capacity in its own history down to the 9,064 seats it holds now.
