Down in the suburbs of Rio, Portuguesa's oldest grudge runs against Bangu, a rivalry that has been kept alive for around 78 years and stands at 93 meetings, Bangu ahead 53 wins to 17. Almost as old is the one against Madureira, a fixture regulars call the Clássico Suburbano — 58 games, Madureira narrowly on top by three wins.

The club grew out of the Ilha do Governador district in 1924, and its home ever since has been the Estádio Luso-Brasileiro, a ground that holds around 5,000. The nickname Lusa comes from that Portuguese lineage, while the more common Rubro-Verde points at the shirt: green body, white shorts, red socks, a colour scheme the fans still sing about — "o rubro verde é minha sina."

Portuguesa has never lifted the Campeonato Carioca's top flight; its best finish there came in 2021, fifth place. Where it has built a record is one tier down and in the state's secondary cups. Five Série A2 titles have come at long intervals — 1939, 1940, then a 56-year gap before 1996, followed by 2000 and 2003 — while the Copa Rio has become something of a specialty, won in 2000, 2016, 2023 and again in 2025.

The U20 side plays through the Campeonato Carioca Sub-20 and the Copa Rio Sub-20, feeding a club that has tended to lean on experienced signings rather than a production line of academy graduates reaching the big Rio clubs. What keeps the fixture list interesting for Portuguesa's youngsters is the same geography that defines the first team: derbies against the other suburban sides, Bangu and Madureira foremost among them, where history counts for as much as the league table.
