In 1904, Fluminense members voted to scrap the grey-and-white shirt the club had worn since its early days and replace it with something more particular: green, white and garnet, the garnet standing for red wine, the white for white wine, the green for rosé. The choice stuck, and it is why the club is still known simply as Tricolor.

Fluminense was founded in 1902 in Rio de Janeiro, and had its first Campeonato Carioca title within four years. State championships piled up after that — 33 by 2023, starting with 1906 and a shared title with Botafogo the year after, then coming in waves through the late 1930s and again across the 1970s and 1980s, before the club closed out 2022 and 2023 with back-to-back wins.

The Rio derby against Flamengo has its own name, Fla-Flu, rather than borrowing the language used elsewhere for local rivalries. Success at national level came less often: four Brazilian championships, in 1970, 1984, 2010 and 2012, spaced out enough that each one stood on its own rather than forming part of a run.

What had been missing was the Copa Libertadores, and Fluminense won it in 2023, more than a century after the vote that settled the club's colours.
