The nickname stuck before the concrete did. Moça Bonita — Beautiful Girl — comes from the district where Bangu built its ground after leaving the old Campo da Rua Ferrer behind, on land that had belonged to the Fazenda da Viúva. Around Rio, the nickname gets used more than the stadium's formal name, Guilherme da Silveira Filho.

Its one afternoon of national attention fell on 14 March 1970, when Bangu hosted a friendly against the Brazil squad being assembled for that year's World Cup win. Pelé, Rivelino and Jairzinho all featured; the game finished 1-1, and it turned out to be the last one João Saldanha oversaw before losing the coaching job. Crowd estimates that day run as high as 32,000, still the largest the ground has recorded.

Four years earlier, Bangu had already given the place something to be proud of, even if the trophy was lifted across town: the 1966 Campeonato Carioca, won 3-0 over Flamengo at the Maracanã. No club outside Rio's traditional big four repeated that for decades.

The stadium has been remade in stages rather than all at once. Work in 2011-2012 brought new seating and lighting, a 2017 safety review then cut the official capacity, and a reconstruction begun in 2023 stripped the old structure down before Moça Bonita reopened in January 2026 with Flamengo against Bangu — its first night match in five years. Away from football, it has also served as a rally ground, drawing thousands to hear President Lula speak in August 2026.
