The furthest São Gonçalo EC have ever gone in Rio de Janeiro's state pyramid was reaching the final of the Campeonato Carioca Série A2 in 2025, where they were defeated by Bangu. It was the first time a club from the city of São Gonçalo had reached a state second-division final.

Home games are played at the Estádio Cantídio Oliveira de Thomaz, a ground known around the city simply as the Catarinão. The team plays in white and blue, and around São Gonçalo it is rarely called anything but Çalo — a short form of the city's own name.

The first title arrived in 2013; a second followed in 2016, and a third in 2024, the last of them played under the tier's current name, Série B1. That win finally carried Çalo into the Série A2, the level that put the club in front of Bangu a year later.
