Qualification stages set the calendar for Sierra Leone's under-23 side more than any league table does, and the next entry is already fixed: Burkina Faso U23 on 28 September 2026, in the Africa Cup of Nations U23 qualifiers. The squad, known in Freetown as the Leone Meteors, trains at the SLFA Academy grounds, a 2,000-capacity setup.
The nearest the team has come to a marquee result was in the 2016 Olympic qualifiers, when it eliminated Cameroon on away goals. A year earlier, the same generation reached the third round of the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualification.
Amidu Karim took over as head coach in October 2022.
