About

The **CAF U23 Cup of Nations** operates as a quadrennial international football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Established in 2011, it initially carried the title of the African U-23 Championship before adopting its current name in 2015 to mirror the senior continental competition. This event functions specifically as the primary continental qualifier for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament, providing a development platform for players under twenty-three years of age.

The final tournament stage features eight teams. The host nation secures an automatic qualification spot, while the remaining seven positions are filled through a multi-stage qualifying process involving home-and-away two-legged ties among member associations. For the 2023 edition, thirty-nine teams entered the qualification phase, with Morocco joining as hosts. The group stage consists of two groups of four teams. The top two sides from each group advance to the semi-finals and final.

Morocco currently holds the title, having won their first championship in 2023 by defeating Egypt 2-1 in extra time. Other previous winners include Gabon, Nigeria, and Egypt, with each nation having claimed the trophy once. Recent changes to the qualification structure have adjusted the number of teams advancing to the Olympics. Historically, the top three finishers qualified for the Games, but for the 2028 cycle onwards, the quota is reduced to two teams following FIFA's expansion of the Olympic men's tournament to sixteen teams.
