Neil Young kept goal at Percy Doyle Reserve for twelve years, from 1996 to 2008, before the A-League took him to the Melbourne Knights, the Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory. He later coached goalkeepers at Melbourne City. Scott Neville was handed his senior debut in the same building in 2006, and Storm Roux came through the youth ranks between 2007 and 2010 on his way to Perth Glory and the New Zealand side.

The club took its name from Sorrento Primary School, which also supplied the first colours — turquoise, black and white. Those gave way to the sky blue shirts and navy trim worn now, and to the nicknames the Gulls and the Sky Blues. It began in 1972 as Sorrento Soccer Club and stayed that until 2005, when the committee changed Soccer to Football.

Percy Doyle Reserve, on Beddi Road in Duncraig, holds 5,251 and has been home since 1979; before that the club played at Marri Reserve in the same suburb.

The State Cup is where Sorrento have their clearest run. They beat Perth SC 1–0 after extra time in the 2011 final, an own goal settling it, then went to extra time again a year later and took Balcatta 4–3. A third came in 2015. Set against that are three finals lost to the Western Knights, in 2000, 2008 and 2017.

The 2017 FFA Cup took them further than any Western Australian NPL club had gone: past Canberra Olympic 1–0 in the round of 32, then out 4–1 to South Melbourne in the last 16.

Relegation cost them their place in the top flight, and the way back was the State League Division 1 title in 2024, won with 16 straight victories — a competition record. The Northern Derby against ECU Joondalup returns with promotion. A fifth league title has not come since 2012.
