Spēks

Spēks spend their weekends colliding with FC Pārgauja, the club they keep meeting in Vidzeme league and cup fixtures without either side ever settling on a name for it. There's no trophy shelf riding on those afternoons, no history stretching back generations — just two neighbouring sides who keep drawing each other in the fixture list.

The club took shape in 2006, registered on paper in Kocēni parish but living, in every way that matters, in Valmiera, where the local press simply calls it the city's team. That gap between the address and the identity is not unusual for a club built from the ground up rather than inherited.

Their honours read like a ladder still being climbed: top of the Vidzeme zone of the 3. līga in 2020, runners-up in the 2. līga in 2021 — a finish good enough to earn a licence for the top flight, which Spēks turned down. In 2025 they won their zone again. None of it amounts to a national title, and Spēks have never reached for one; they've stayed a step below, promotion offered and declined rather than chased.

Home games are played at the Valmiera football club's own sports base on Sporta iela, a ground that holds 1,108 — enough for a third-division crowd and not built for more. The team turns out in yellow and black, black on the road.

No one at Spēks has gone on to the Latvian national side or a professional deal abroad. The names on the team sheet — Kaspars Bacis, Aleksandrs Barkovskis, Alvis Dubovs among them — are the ones Valmiera actually knows, footballers who play for the city rather than through it on their way somewhere bigger.
