The one season that still gets mentioned locally is 1977/78, promotion into the 2. Bundesliga North followed by immediate relegation. Cup form has held up rather better: SSVg beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 in the 2003 Niederrheinpokal final, a result that sent them into the DFB-Pokal first round, where they knocked out Mainz 05. A second Niederrheinpokal followed in 2006, 1-0 against Wuppertal. More recently, Oberliga Niederrhein titles in 2022/23 and 2024/25 have kept the club in the promotion conversation at fifth-division level.

Local derbies matter more than league position here — against TVD Velbert first, SC Velbert second, with Wuppertaler SV supplying the wider Bergisches rivalry. Home games are still played at what was Stadion Velbert until a naming-rights sale in 2022 made it the IMS Arena. It holds 3,000.
