SV Breinig

SV Breinig's derby doesn't run through Aachen, whatever the fixture list with Alemannia Aachen might suggest — those meetings are friendlies between neighbours, nothing more. The rivalry that matters locally is with SV Eilendorf, and the local press reaches for the word "derby" only for that one.

The club traces to 1910, founded as FC Victoria Breinig before taking its current name in 1919. On 17 June 2021 it merged with FC Breinigerberg, which is why the full name on the registration papers now runs to Spielverein 1910 Breinig Breinigerberg e. V. Breinig itself is not a town in its own right but a district of Stolberg, near Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Egidius Braun started playing here at 13 and chaired the club from 1956 to 1959, decades before he became president of the DFB. Kai Michalke, who had a Bundesliga career behind him, took over as coach in 2010. Björn Rother and Abdulkadir Özgen both came through the youth setup before turning professional elsewhere, at clubs including Alemannia Aachen and Bayer Leverkusen.

On the field, Breinig sits at the seventh tier of the German pyramid, the Landesliga Mittelrhein, having gone up twice and come back down once. Runners-up in 2015, they won the title outright in 2017, only to be relegated from the Mittelrheinliga in 2022. Earlier finishes as Bezirksliga runners-up, in 1986 and in 1989, round out a record with no silverware from beyond the region.
