Uzunkopruspor

In the spring of 1989, Uzunköprüspor spent a season in the 2. Lig and finished 18th out of 18, taking four wins from 34 matches and going back down as it had come up. The club had won the 3. Lig title the year before, and the drop was as fast as the rise. Colours were part of the story before results were: yellow from the predecessor side, Uzunköprü Gençlerbirliği, and green from Doğanspor, stitched together into the sarı-yeşil the club has worn since.

Fourteen years in amateur football preceded the promotion of 1984–85, and the top-flight brush of 1988–89 turned out to be the high-water mark rather than a beginning. Professional status held through the 3. Lig until 1996, when a 14th-place finish cost the club its place among the paid ranks. Two decades in the amateur leagues of Edirne Province followed, including a spell in the regional first tier, before the Edirne Super Amateur League title of 2015–16 sent Uzunköprüspor back up to the Bölgesel Amatör Lig, where it has stayed since.

Turgay Kuyucu remains the club's record man from the professional years: 100 appearances and 16 goals between 1988 and 1993, a tally nobody who came after has matched. The Uzunköprü Ergene Stadium holds 800, which sets the scale of the fixtures that matter most locally — against Edirnespor, played as the Edirne derby, and against Keşanspor. Akıncılar, the Raiders, is the name the supporters go by; the club itself never settled on one.

What the 1988–89 season proved, in the end, is that Uzunköprüspor could reach the second tier at all — a fact the following thirty-odd years of amateur football have not repeated.
