Virunga

Goma sits on the shore of Lake Kivu, in a stretch of North Kivu that has spent decades under the shadow of conflict and the nearby volcano, and DC Virunga carries the region's name into every match it plays. The club took shape in 1964, and its supporters know it as Les Montagnards, a nod to the mountains that ring the city rather than to any single peak.

The team's identity has long been built on the Derby Gomatracien against AS Kabasha, a fixture locals describe as tense from the first whistle, sharpened further by the shorter-running rivalries with AS Dauphins Noirs and FC Mwangaza. Virunga has moved between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 over the years rather than settling at the top, and for a long stretch its cabinet held only provincial silverware: four Nord-Kivu Provincial League titles, taken in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2016, plus a runners-up finish in the Coupe du Congo back in 2008, when the national trophy stayed just out of reach.

That changed in 2026. Virunga went the distance with AS Bustras in the Coupe du Congo final, drew 1–1 and won it on penalties, 4–2, for a first major national trophy in the club's history. Christian Elombe's winning goal in 2018 is still the kind of moment fans bring up in Goma, the sort of strike that keeps a mid-table club relevant between titles.

Off the pitch, the club runs the Virunga Football Academy, drawing its players from communities around Virunga National Park, a pipeline that matters more in a city where organised youth football has few other outlets. The team plays in white and green at the Stade de l'Unité in Karisimbi, a ground that holds 15,000.
