Volgar Astrakhan

Between 2007 and 2009, the club then known as Volgar-Gazprom fell out of Russia's professional pyramid and played on as Volgar-Gazprom-2. In 2007 the team won the Russian Cup among amateur clubs and the MOA Chernozemye Cup, results that reopened the door to professional competition.

The club's history runs deeper than its official founding date suggests. The side was revived as Volgar in 1960, the year now recognised as the club's foundation, and in 1995 picked up a sponsor's name to become Volgar-Gazprom. It returned to the plain historic name Volgar from the 2012/13 season.

Volgar has taken its zone outright in the lower tiers of Russian football on several occasions, most recently in 2019/20, when winning the PFL South zone sent the club back up to the FNL. Further back, in 1967, it took both the RSFSR Class B championship and the RSFSR Cup in the same year, and in 2015 added the FNL Cup. The 2024/25 season closed with third place in the Second League's Gold group.

Matches are played at the Tsentralny stadium, rebuilt to hold 18,000.
