The green and white have stayed since 1899, and so has the ground: the Weserstadion, holding 42,100 for league fixtures.

For a long stretch the club belonged to the top division as a matter of course. The four Bundesliga titles are spread across four decades — 1965, 1988, 1993 and 2004. The 1992 Cup Winners' Cup came from a 2–0 win over AS Monaco in the final.

Thomas Schaaf managed the side that took the league and the DFB-Pokal together in 2003–04. Miroslav Klose arrived that summer, Claudio Pizarro would return more than once. Pizarro's association with the club ran across five separate spells, and he finished as its all-time leading scorer.

Marco Bode never played for anyone else. Thirteen years, 1990 to 2003, one club.

The Nordderby against Hamburger SV and the Niedersachsen-Derby with Hannover 96 give the calendar its two fixed points.

Mesut Özil and Niclas Füllkrug both came through here. So did the shock of 2021, when the club dropped into the 2. The 2025–26 season has brought another relegation battle.
