Wv-hedw

The Derby van Oost sends WV-HEDW across east Amsterdam to face DVVA.

The name carries four clubs. Wilhelmina Vooruit came first, on 25 May 1908, and won its early titles quickly — the AVB second class in 1910, the first class the year after, then the KNVB third class D in 1915. Hortus and Eendracht Doet Winnen joined together as HEDW in 1931, and WV and HEDW merged in 1956 to make the club that plays now.

That same year a memorial went up at Sportpark Voorland, the old ground. It names 67 members of WV and 169 of HEDW, murdered during the German occupation. The club restored and enlarged it in 1998, and again in the years since. Housing works pushed WV-HEDW off Voorland in the late 1990s; it has played at Sportpark Middenmeer, with room for 1,500, ever since.

Jan van Diepenbeek arrived in 1938 after leaving Ajax, four caps for the Netherlands behind him and a place in the 1934 World Cup squad.

WV-HEDW now runs one of the largest senior sections in the Netherlands, counted by number of teams, in blue and white. The Saturday side took the second class in 2015; the Sunday side won the third class in 2024. The under-9s took the national title in the 2023/24 season.
