Agia Sophia Stadium
Athens, Greece
Formerly: OPAP Arena
The ground sits where the old Nikos Goumas Stadium once stood, that original patch of earth in Athens having been cleared away after the earthquake of 1999. Construction of the new venue did not begin in earnest until 2017, following years of legal battles that kept the site empty. When it finally opened in late 2022, the structure was built to hold 32,500, though the official licensed capacity for matches is 31,100.
What makes this place distinct is its proximity to the pitch.
There is a history of violence associated with the club, and a tragic incident outside the stadium in August 2023, where a fan was killed during clashes between rival groups, led to the postponement of a Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb. The ground has since been used for the Greece national team and hosted the 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League Final, where Olympiacos defeated Fiorentina 1–0. It is currently known as the AEK Arena under UEFA sponsorship rules, though locally the name has shifted from OPAP Arena following a rebranding of the naming rights partner.
