Aek Athens U19

AEK Athens U19 have sent Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Kostas Manolas through the same gates at Spata that now open every morning for the next group of teenagers. That pipeline is the point of the place: AEK set up its academy in 1934, the first Greek club to run one at all, and put it on a professional footing in 1979.

The senior side traces back to 1924, founded by Greek refugees who had fled Constantinople after the Greco-Turkish War, and the U19 team still carries that history on its crest, in the same yellow and black, under the nickname Kitrinómavri. Its own football, though, is played away from the noise of the first team, at the Serafidio Stadium inside the Spata training centre.

Competitively the age group is judged on two stages: the Greek Super League U19 at home, and the UEFA Youth League against foreign opposition, where the 2024–25 campaign brought a group-stage meeting with LASK. Results there matter less than what the club has always used the level for — proving players ready for promotion.

None of that changes what the fixture list looks like on derby weekends. AEK's young side inherits the same lines drawn by the senior team: Panathinaikos across the city, and Olympiacos in a rivalry that carries its own weight regardless of the age group on the team sheet.
