Al-Quwaysimah Stadium
Amman, Jordan
The ground sits in the Al-Quwaysimah district of Amman. Locals call it by its location, but the official placards read King Abdullah II Stadium. It opened in 1998.
What defines the place is not its history but its recent refresh. During the build-up for the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, the Greater Amman Municipality stepped in to update the pitch and replace the seating with numbered rows. This work pushed the official capacity to 13,265, a figure that appears in FIFA documentation, though older reports still quote numbers as high as 20,000. The grass remains natural, and a final round of maintenance was completed in January 2025.
The stadium serves Al-Wehdat SC as its home, but it has also hosted Al-Ahli and Shabab Al-Ordon, as well as the national team. It has seen the highest profile matches in Jordan, including qualifiers against Japan and Uzbekistan. The crowd of 18,000 for a match against Japan in 2013 stands as the record. International fixtures have included semi-finals of the AFC Women's Asian Cup and quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
There is a darker memory here, too. In 2010, a derby between Al-Wehdat and Al-Faisaly ended in violence that injured approximately 250 people, an incident now known as the Al Quwaysimah riot. The venue currently hosts club competitions like the King Salman Club Cup, where Shabab Al-Ordon defeated Nouadibou in the final. The ground does not have a sponsor’s name on it, keeping its official title intact.
