Arena Katowice
Two venues share a plot in Katowice, and the confusion never fully goes away. The saucer-shaped Spodek opened in 1971 and hosted world hockey and handball championships, EuroBasket, volleyball finals, and CS:GO crowds under Intel Extreme Masters. The football ground next to it is a different building altogether: Arena Katowice, home to GKS Katowice.
The pitch itself has needed attention more than once. A new natural-grass surface meeting DIN 18035-4 standard went down in 2024, only for the vegetation layer to be relaid in June 2026 after the soil composition fell short of requirements — heated turf and automatic drainage and irrigation are meant to prevent exactly that kind of problem.
Arena Katowice still plays without a title sponsor. GKS Katowice opened a search for one in July 2025, and as of now the ground carries its plain name rather than a commercial one.
Sitting in the Załęska Hałda district, the stadium holds a fraction of what Spodek can pack in for a concert or a cup final, and its own list of landmark nights is still short next to its neighbour's. What defines it for now is the football itself, and GKS Katowice's day-to-day tenancy there.
