Arthur Edden Oval

The ground carries the name of a man who never saw it bear it. Alderman Arthur Ernest Edden sat on Newcastle Council and died in January 1971; the naming was gazetted in May 1972, more than a year after his death. Before that the fields here went by whatever was to hand — a number, No. 9 Oval, or the names of what sat alongside, Blackley Oval, Wallarah Oval. A ground with four former names is a ground nobody got around to naming.

The land was set aside for public recreation by the NSW Government in June 1935, cut out of the old Newcastle Pasturage Reserve, and it stayed pasture-flat for decades: aerial photographs from 1966 show fields already marked out. Football arrived before the name did. Lambton Jaffas moved in in 1969 and have not left.

It remains a council facility — grass, no running track, and a fence that keeps two thousand people close to the touchline. That number matters most on the days it is tested. In 2014 the Jaffas won the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW Grand Final here, beating Weston Workers Bears 2–0. Ten years later the Australia Cup sent Melbourne Victory up from the A-League for a Round of 32 tie; the visitors won 4–1.

Edgeworth Eagles, Hamilton Olympic, Broadmeadow Magic and Weston Bears have all used the ground at one time or another, which is what happens to a well-kept oval in a district with more clubs than pitches.
