The ground was built for a final it did not get for another three years. The stadium opened on 31 July 2002 with a pre-season friendly between Galatasaray and Olympiacos in front of 79,414 — a figure it has not matched since, and the football attendance record still stands from that first night.

Michel Macary and Aymeric Zublena drew it. Tekfen led the construction alongside Campenon Bernard, at a cost of around US$140 million. Before the 2005 UEFA Champions League final the seats with obstructed views were taken out, cutting the capacity from 80,597 to 76,092, where it stayed until 2019.

The stadium was due to stage the finals of 2020 and 2021; both went to Portugal instead when the pandemic intervened. It got its second in 2023, Manchester City beating Inter Milan 1–0 with 71,412 present.

Galatasaray moved in for 2003–04 while Ali Sami Yen was rebuilt, Beşiktaş from 2013 to 2016 while Vodafone Park went up, İstanbul Başakşehir from 2007 to 2014, Kasımpaşa for a season. Fatih Karagümrük have played there since promotion to the Süper Lig in 2020.
