BC Place
The roof over BC Place is what sets it apart from any other ground on this list.
That machinery has made BC Place a venue for occasions rather than a single tenant's home. The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics were staged here, as was the final of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Pope John Paul II addressed a crowd of 60,000 in 1984, and Expo '86 opened and closed under the same roof with Prince Charles and Princess Diana in attendance. For a fortnight in October 2023 the stadium carried a different name altogether, Christine Sinclair Place.
Capacity has come down a long way from the 60,000 the building held at opening; football matches now draw on the lower bowl alone, seating 22,120. The record crowd belongs not to a match but to a concert — 65,061 for Ed Sheeran on 2 September 2023, edging past the mark U2 had held since 2009. The ground returns to the football calendar with seven matches at the 2026 World Cup, plus a share of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup fixtures.
