Vancouver Whitecaps

Alphonso Davies was fifteen when Vancouver Whitecaps sent him on for his first-team debut.

The name predates that academy by decades. A team called Vancouver Whitecaps first took the field in 1974 in the old North American Soccer League, built around a forward named Bob Lenarduzzi, who would later run the club from the boardroom instead of the pitch. That side won the Soccer Bowl in 1979, Alan Ball taking the play-off MVP award. NASL folded in 1984 and took the Whitecaps with it; what carried the badge through the lower divisions afterwards was a team called the Vancouver 86ers, who reclaimed the old name in 2001 and eventually walked it into MLS in 2011. The current club counts the 1979 title as its own, treating itself as a continuation rather than a fresh start.

Trophies since have come almost entirely in the Canadian Championship, not MLS itself: five wins, including three straight from 2022 to 2024 under Vanni Sartini before Jesper Sörensen took over the bench. Those Voyageurs Cup nights sit alongside an unofficial prize the fans care about just as much, the Cascadia Cup, contested every year against Seattle Sounders in a rivalry.

Home matches are played at BC Place, though "home" only stretches to the lower bowl — 22,120 seats carved out of a stadium that holds roughly 54,500 for other events. The club rents the building from the provincial government and has said the arrangement leaves it without the commercial rights, sponsorship and concessions among them, that clubs elsewhere take for granted. Talks over a longer lease, or a ground of its own near Hastings Park, have dragged without resolution.
