Dominic Kinnear arrived in Houston with a squad that had just been uprooted. The owners of San Jose Earthquakes could not get a stadium built in California, so after the 2005 season the players and coaching staff moved to Texas, and the club was formally established on 15 December 2005. Both finals were against New England Revolution — the first on penalties, the second 2-1.
The league changed course, and the club took its name from the city's energy industry and from an earlier local side called the Houston Dynamos.
Brian Ching remains the club's leading scorer with 68 goals and was named the most valuable player of the 2006 final. Brad Davis captained the side through nine seasons and holds the records for appearances and assists.
The trophies since have come in the US Open Cup — over Columbus Crew in 2018, over Inter Miami in 2023.
