Sporting Kansas City draws the sharpest reaction from Allianz Field, and Minnesota United still carries more near-misses than silverware from those years. The club traces back to a gap left in 2009, when Minnesota Thunder folded after nearly two decades in the lower divisions; United was not its legal successor, but it filled the same space, taking the field in NASL under the name Minnesota Stars before adopting its current identity in 2013.

The NASL years were the club's best. In 2011 it beat Fort Lauderdale Strikers 3-1 on aggregate to win the Soccer Bowl, then added the Spring Championship in 2014. A second Soccer Bowl final followed in 2016, lost 1-0 to New York Cosmos. Manny Lagos coached through most of that stretch before handing the team to Jason Kreis for the 2017 move into MLS.

MLS has been longer on near-misses than trophies. The 2019 US Open Cup final ended 2-1 to Atlanta United, and in 2020 the Loons reached the Western Conference final before Seattle Sounders won it 3-2. Allianz Field, the 19,400-seat home that opened on 13 April 2019, has been the stage for both.

Christian Ramirez remains the club's leading scorer with 72 goals, and Ike Opara was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2019, but it is Osvaldo Alonso who is remembered longest here — the Cuban midfielder who captained the side and gave a young MLS club the kind of steadying presence it hadn't had before him.
