Seattle's fiercest football arguments are not settled in MLS Cup finals but every year against Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in matches for the Cascadia Cup. The trophy carries no prize money and no league points, yet along the Pacific coast it settles who has the better claim to the region for the season.

The current franchise was announced on 13 November 2007 and played its first MLS season in 2009, but the club has never treated that as its starting point. Seattle Sounders FC carries the name and colours of a Sounders side that played in the NASL back in 1974, and the modern club counts that history as its own rather than beginning the story again in the 2000s.

Home matches are played at Lumen Field, a ground that has gone by three earlier names — Seahawks Stadium, Qwest Field, CenturyLink Field — before this one, and holds 37,722 for MLS fixtures.

Seattle has won the MLS Cup twice, in 2016 and 2019, added the Supporters' Shield in 2014, and took the US Open Cup four times between 2009 and 2014. The CONCACAF Champions League followed in 2022.

Of the players who came through that run, Jordan Morris is the one most associated with the club's own upbringing: he graduated from the Sounders academy and went on to make the first team his own, rather than arriving from somewhere else.
