Major League Soccer needed a flagship for the Washington region when the league organised itself around eight charter clubs in 1994, and this one carried the capital's colours into the first kick-off two years later.

Bruce Arena built the early teams, and they answered for it: an MLS Cup and the Open Cup in the club's debut season, a second MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield the year after, then the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Copa Interamericana in 1998. Ben Olsen, who had played 221 games in black and red, later returned as coach and added an Open Cup of his own in 2013.

Home for the first two decades was RFK Stadium, before the move in 2018 to Audi Field, a 20,000-seat ground built for football and nothing else. The same year, Wayne Rooney signed and briefly became the most expensive player MLS had known, scoring 25 goals in 52 appearances before moving on. Earlier generations remember Marco Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno instead — Moreno alone scored 131 league goals across 329 games, a tally that still anchors the club's sense of itself.

None of that history travels north without meeting New York Red Bulls or Philadelphia Union. Both fixtures run along the same stretch of interstate, and supporters fold them into one another as the I-95 Derby — Atlantic Cup against New York, Colonial Cup against Philadelphia, the same corridor producing two rivalries instead of one.
