Wayne Rooney has threatened legal action against Andy Carroll over claims in Carroll's forthcoming autobiography that the two men drank together during England training camps.
Rooney's lawyers have sent a formal letter to the publisher demanding the claim be retracted.
Rooney and Carroll were England team-mates, including at Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland.
"Wayne is livid. He's not messing around. His legal team have sent a strongly worded letter to the publisher. He wants it retracted as it is completely untrue. Wayne knows he's no angel, but this crossed the line. It's a matter of principle," a source told The Sun.
Another source described Carroll's position as increasingly awkward. "Andy is spiralling over the whole situation. He didn't think for a second Rooney would kick off like this. Andy had a book to sell and now he's in over his head. There may be a public apology coming unless he wants a legal battle on his hands," the source said.
A third insider linked the dispute to changes in Rooney's own life since retiring from playing.
Mirror Sport said it had contacted Pan Macmillan and Rooney's representatives for comment. Neither side had responded publicly by the time of writing.
