On a cold night at BMO Field in December 2017, Toronto FC lifted the MLS Cup with the Supporters' Shield and the Canadian Championship already secured that same year.

The team had started far more modestly. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment paid 10 million US dollars for the expansion rights and put the club on the pitch in 2005, choosing red and white as its colours and the nickname the Reds, rendered as Les Rouges in French. BMO Field became home in 2007, and its capacity of 28,351 is set to expand to 45,736 for the 2026 World Cup.

Domestically, the Canadian Championship has been the club's most consistent hunting ground: eleven titles between 2009 and 2023, interrupted by final defeats in 2008, 2018, 2022 and 2024 that kept the record from looking tidy. The MLS Cup final has been reached twice more, in 2016 and 2019, both times lost.

The fixture against CF Montréal, played along the stretch of Highway 401 that links the two cities, carries the name Canadian Classique and draws the sharpest atmosphere of the calendar; a lesser but still contested meeting with Columbus Crew is fought over the Trillium Cup.

No player at the club is remembered quite like Sebastian Giovinco.
