Breese Stevens Field

Breese Stevens Field has run continuously since 1926; the original grandstand went up that year to a Mediterranean Revival design by the Madison firm Claude and Stark. The city built it for the Madison Blues baseball club and named it after Breese J. Stevens, a former mayor and university regent whose widow sold the land. The stone perimeter walls followed in 1934 and the wooden press box in 1939, both added through Depression-era WPA labour.

Its guest list runs well past football. Chicago Bears, Milwaukee Badgers and Chicago Cardinals all played NFL fixtures on the field, the New York Yankees trained there in 1946, and Satchel Paige appeared in a Negro leagues game in 1947. The site also carries a harder memory: the racially charged unrest of 3 August 1968, remembered locally as the Breese Stevens incident.

Natural turf gave way to an artificial surface in 2014, and the city has pencilled in a further resurfacing for 2026 at an estimated $850,000. Forward Madison FC have called the ground home since the club's founding in 2019, sharing it with the Madison Radicals of Ultimate and, from 2026, Rally Madison FC of the USL W League. The attendance record, however, belongs to music rather than sport: Darius Rucker drew more than 7,500 in 2024, edging past The Avett Brothers' similar crowd in 2015.
