Forward Madison and Charlotte Independence shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw during the Group Stage of the USL League One on Saturday evening. J. Skinner opened the scoring early on, only for R. Carmichael to level matters in the second half. The result keeps both sides within touching distance at the top of the table by then.
Skinner struck in the eleventh minute to give the hosts the early advantage, and they looked comfortable for much of the opening period. Charlotte responded after the break, with Carmichael finding the net in the fifty-eighth minute to set up a tense finish. There were no red cards to disrupt the contest, though five yellow cards were shown between both sides.
Coaches made several changes in search of a winner, with Charlotte bringing on A. Edwards and S. Gyamfi together in the sixty-fifth minute. Forward Madison responded with a double substitution of V. Ortiz and J. Bakero thirty seconds later, while C. McCamy came on alone in the eightieth. The hosts added C. Jaime and S. Marou late on, with the home side also introducing J. Amaya in the eighty-second minute.
And here's the thing about the statistics. Forward Madison recorded 115 attacks against 97 for the visitors, while their nine shots on target compared to just one for Charlotte. The hosts controlled 52 per cent of possession and won seven corners to two, yet the accuracy of their shooting was only 43 per cent. One could argue they created more, but conversion was the issue.
By the final whistle the standings remained largely unchanged, though the points gap narrowed slightly. Charlotte sit top with 46 points from 22 games, having won fourteen and lost four, while Forward Madison occupy third with 23 points from 23 matches. The hosts have won thirteen times and dropped four defeats so far this campaign.
