USL League One is a professional men's soccer league in the United States, sanctioned as a Division III league by the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF). Founded in 2017 by the United Soccer League (USL), the competition began play in 2019. It operates on a franchise model with no automatic promotion or relegation to the USL Championship, though the USL has announced plans to introduce a promotion/relegation system across its three tiers starting around 2027–2028. As of the 2026 season, the league consists of 17 teams. The season format includes a regular season of 32 games per team, followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament featuring eight teams, where the top seeds receive byes to the semifinals. Additionally, teams participate in the USL Cup, a pre-season knockout tournament. The league is distinct from MLS Next Pro, which is a reserve league for MLS clubs with no salary cap and a focus on youth development, and from NISA, an independent league that has faced stability issues and loss of sanctioning. USL League One clubs are independently owned and operate under a salary cap structure. Notable champions include Union Omaha, who won the title in 2021 and 2024, and One Knoxville SC, the current champion as of the 2025 season.
