The Richmond Kickers have one major cup to their name, and it came in the same year the club still counted as a newcomer. In 1995, two seasons after their first match, the Kickers won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, still the only time they have lifted it, and paired it that year with the USISL Premier League playoff title, beating the Cocoa Expos in the final. The club has since collected two more third- and fourth-division playoff championships and twice took the Commissioner's Cup in the old A-League, in 1998 and 2001, before losing the 2005 USL First Division final to Seattle Sounders. The most recent silverware came in 2022, when Richmond topped the USL League One regular season table with 51 points.

The Kickers were founded in 1993, playing their first match that May, and spent their first two seasons on the University of Richmond's soccer and track complex before moving to City Stadium in 1995, a ground that dates to 1929 and holds 22,611 in full but is configured to 6,000 for Kickers matches. Ownership passed from the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club to 22 Holdings in 2018, though the club has never changed its name. Red and white became the settled colours from 2001, with navy and black used on the road.

Rivalries have grown around geography as much as results: the Henny Derby against Forward Madison FC takes its name from Henrico County, and matches against North Carolina FC carry the weight of a Virginia-Carolina fixture running since the 1990s, while Charleston Battery have been opponents since the club's founding year.

No player is more tied to the Kickers' recent reputation than Matt Turner, who arrived on loan from New England Revolution in 2017 and 2018 before establishing himself as first-choice goalkeeper for the Revolution, the U.S. national team and Arsenal, and was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021.
