About

The USL League One Cup, currently branded as the USL Cup, was established in 2024 by the United Soccer League. Operating as an in-season tournament, it runs concurrently with the regular season but maintains its own distinct standings separate from league play. The competition serves as a knockout stage for clubs within the USL ecosystem, which encompasses the third-tier USL League One and the second-tier USL Championship.

The format has shifted since its inception. The first edition involved only the twelve clubs from the USL League One, dividing them into groups before moving to a knockout phase. The following year expanded the field to include all thirty-eight clubs from both the League One and the Championship, organizing them into six regional groups. The top team from each group and two wildcard qualifiers advance to an eight-team bracket. Unique regulations govern group play, where a shootout victory awards two points and a loss awards one, with goals scored acting as a tiebreaker for wildcard positions.

Recent history shows a rotation of champions. Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC claimed the inaugural title in 2024, defeating Forward Madison FC. Hartford Athletic secured the 2025 victory over Sacramento Republic FC. Spokane Velocity became the current holder after winning the 2026 final against Oakland Roots SC.

The structure differs significantly from the standard league format, which relies on a single table and home-and-away matches to determine the champion through a playoff system. The Cup offers a World Cup-style experience with regional groupings. While promotion and relegation currently do not exist between the tiers, the league has plans to introduce such a system alongside a new top-tier league starting in the 2027-28 season.
