Bray's ground began life as a cricket and archery field, and the ceremony that opened it was performed by the 7th Earl of Carlisle in his role as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

The record crowd goes back to a FAI Cup semi-final replay against Cork City in April 1989, when 5,000 packed in.

Ireland's rugby league side has used the Carlisle Grounds too, including a fixture against Belgium and the Student 4 Nations tournament. Film crews found it useful as well — in 1996 it stood in for the Bloody Sunday scene in Michael Collins .
