Celtic Park (Paradise)

Two names have hung over this ground since 1892 — the club used the site of a brick factory in Parkhead, and the shift from the old, graveyard-adjacent ground gave the place its nickname almost immediately: journalists called the move a passage from a cemetery to Paradise.

Between 1957 and 1971 the club roofed each stand in turn — west in 1957, north in 1966, east in 1967, the Main Stand last in 1971 — and pushed capacity toward 80,000 in the process. That version of the ground disappeared between 1994 and 1998, when the Taylor Report's all-seater requirement forced a full rebuild in four stages: north in August 1995, east and west following over the next three years. Only the Main Stand, raised in 1929 after its predecessor was condemned as unsafe, survived the process untouched.

What resulted seats 60,411 — the largest ground in Scottish football and the eighth-largest in the United Kingdom. The pitch itself has had its own upgrade: a SISGrass hybrid surface, 95 per cent natural turf reinforced with synthetic fibre, installed at a cost of £1.5 million at Brendan Rodgers' request. Rail seating went in during 2016 as safe-standing legislation changed.

The record attendance dates to 1 January 1938, an Old Firm fixture against Rangers. The official figure is 83,500; Celtic's own historical accounts put the true number nearer 92,000 once those locked outside are counted. The ground hosted the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and took Scotland Cup finals and international matches in its stride.
