What changed around it was the city itself: Alma-Ata became Almaty, and the ground's paperwork followed, while the stadium kept its original title straight through. It went up from scratch on open ground, designed by architect Adambek Kapanov with A. Ya. Kosov as co-author.

The rebuilding since has come in stages rather than one sweep. Ahead of the second Central Asian Games in 1997, Almaty laid a new Mondo running track, swapped the old wooden benches for plastic seating and put up an electronic scoreboard. Kazakhstan's admission to UEFA brought a further round of work in 2002–2004, when a metal canopy weighing more than 350 tonnes and covering over 4,000 square metres went up over the west stand.

The heaviest rebuild came in 2009–2010, paid for from the city budget: the old grass gave way to a hybrid pitch — natural turf reinforced with synthetic fibre — cut to UEFA's 105-by-68-metre dimensions, with undersoil heating and irrigation added alongside new floodlights and a photo-finish timing system. The ground reopened on 18 September 2010.

None of that has settled the question of size. The Central Stadium has started to make life awkward for organisers ahead of a UEFA Europa Conference League fixture, and plans now on the table would take capacity up towards 35,000.
