Coyer Field
For decades, the press box overlooking this Buffalo State University ground carried a nickname that outlived its blueprints: locals called it the Hut on Stilts, a raised wooden structure that stood until construction began in the summer of 2014 and gave way, in 2015, to a $1.9 million replacement.
The field itself carries an older debt. It is named for Hubert "Hub" Coyer, who coached and ran the college's athletics programme from 1931 to 1963. No source pins down the exact year the ground opened, only that it dates to the early 1960s, around the time Coyer's tenure was ending.
The playing surface has changed more than once. Natural grass gave way to a synthetic field in 2008, and in the summer of 2019 that surface was replaced again, with FieldTurf Vertex laid down and a Samsung Prismview video board added alongside it.
Coyer Field now serves Buffalo State's Bengals — football, track and lacrosse, competing in NCAA Division III's Empire 8 Conference — as well as FC Buffalo, who play here in USL League Two and the USL W League. The ground has also hosted outside tenants: Flower City 1872 of the UWS, and clubs from the UPSL, including a UWS national championship semi-final in 2021.
