Estadio 1º de Abril

Everything about the Estadio 1º de Abril is younger than the club that plays there. Club Luján waited sixty-one years on the Campo Municipal de Deportes before moving into a ground of its own, and the wait shows in the name: the date it finally opened, 3 September 2022, against Claypole, sits second to the date the ground actually honours — 1 April 1936, the day the club was founded. The stadium was named for the club's birthday, not its own.

The club itself carries the odder history. It started life as Club River Plate, a name it held until September 1947, when Argentine regulations forced the change to Club Luján to avoid confusion with the Buenos Aires giant of the same name. The stadium, in that sense, is the first permanent home the club has built under the name it has now carried for most of its existence.

It sits on the edge of the city, at the corner of El Pechito Colorado and La Viudita, in the San Emilio neighbourhood — a location that places it apart from the pilgrimage routes and colonial centre for which Luján is otherwise known nationally. At 2,000 capacity it is built for regional football rather than occasion, a ground that finally gave the club a fixed address after decades of playing as a tenant in its own city.
