Estadio Alejandro Villanueva
Lima, Peru
Formerly: Estadio del Club Alianza Lima, Monumental Estadio del Club Alianza Lima
Everyone in Lima calls it Матуте. When the ground opened on 27 December 1974, it was simply the Estadio del Club Alianza Lima. The renaming came in 1981, pushed by the supporters, who wanted the arena to carry Алехандро Вильянуэва, the club forward who died in 1951. A sculpture of him went up on the western stand the same year.
The first match there was a friendly against Насьональ of Montevideo, drawn 2:2, part of a four-team tournament that also brought in Университарио and Индепендьенте of Argentina. Индепендьенте returned on 17 December 1987 for the night that still holds the attendance record: 40 019 people, a fundraising and memorial match for the Alianza squad lost in the Fokker F-27 crash. The remains of the players and staff were present in the ground. Индепендьенте won 1:2.
The following year after its opening, in 1975, Матуте took group games and a semi-final of the Кубок Америки — Peru beat Bolivia and Chile 3:1 each, then lost 0:2 to Brazil and reached the final on a drawn lot. In 2012 the final of the Кубок Либертадорес Sub-20 was played here, Ривер Плейт beating Дефенсор Спортинг 1:0.
In November 2023, after Университарио won the Peruvian championship 2:0 at Матуте, the home club cut the floodlights to stop the celebration. The ground was shut for seven months and fined 100 000 soles.
