Estadio Bello Horizonte - Rey Pelé
Villavicencio, Colombia
Formerly: Estadio El Barzal, Estadio Macal, Estadio Horizonte, Estadio Manuel Calle Lombana, Estadio Bello Horizonte
The venue was inaugurated in 1977, replacing a smaller facility in the Barzal neighbourhood. It was built within the Olympic Park complex to serve the growing population of the city. The original design was simple: concrete steps, a basic shelter for the press, and a tall steel mast for floodlights that still stands at the rear of the ground. For decades, it functioned as the primary sporting venue for the region, hosting local competitions and university matches.
Its architectural character is defined by this lack of modernization. While the pitch was converted from artificial turf to natural grass in late 2022, the surrounding infrastructure remains largely unchanged. The running track that encircles the field is a faded red, worn smooth by years of athletics meets. The seating is mixed, with some sections painted in blocks of colour and others left in the original grey. The single covered stand provides the only shade for spectators during the afternoon sun.
The ground is the home of Llaneros F.C., a club that has played here since 2012. The team's arrival prompted the installation of modern lighting and the conversion of the surface, but the fundamental shape of the stadium has not altered. Visits from larger clubs from Bogotá have been occasional, played often in driving rain when the roads to the capital become impassable. The atmosphere is confined; the sound of the crowd is directed straight back onto the field. There is nowhere for the noise to escape.
The most recent change to the site was the renaming of the stadium in January 2023, following a suggestion by FIFA. The addition of "Rey Pelé" to the official title was a tribute to the Brazilian legend, but the physical reality of the ground remains grounded in its regional identity. It is a functional space, stripped of unnecessary embellishment, designed for the specific climate and needs of the Llanos region.
