Estádio Benito Agnelo Castellano
Rio Claro, Brazil
The name outlasted the sponsors who never came: Rio Claro's ground has carried Benito Agnelo Castellano's name since it opened, with no rebranding in between, in a state where stadiums routinely change hands and titles. Benitão, as it is known locally, sits close to the city centre, near the Santa Casa de Misericórdia hospital, in the Bairro da Saúde — an address that puts a 10,000-capacity ground inside walking distance of daily city life rather than out on a ring road.
Ownership tells its own story: since 2008 the stadium has belonged to the municipality of Rio Claro, not to the club that plays there. Associação Esportiva Velo Clube Rioclarense runs it as tenant and sporting administrator, a split between bricks and football common enough in the interior of São Paulo state, where town halls often end up holding the deeds to grounds built for a single team. The pitch is natural grass, laid and maintained with Bermuda Tifway turf.
What the ground has kept, through changes of landlord and periods of disuse by its listed address, is the one name given to it in 1972.
