Long before it fielded any footballers, the club in Rio Claro belonged to cyclists — the name Velo comes straight from the French vélo, and racing on two wheels was the point of the association when it first came together. Football only entered the picture from 1920, once Velo Clube merged with Comercial Futebol Clube, and the game gradually took over as the club's main business. The founding itself is dated to 28 August 1910, in the state of São Paulo.

The senior side plays at Estádio Benito Agnelo Castellano, known locally as Benitão, holding 10,000 after recent work on the ground. Green, white and red are the club colours, worn under the nicknames Velão and Rubro-Verde.

Silverware has been rare and hard-won. The one state-level title on record dates back to 1925, in the old Campeonato do Interior do Estado de São Paulo. It took until 2024 for the next line to be added, when the first team won the Campeonato Paulista Série A2 and with it a route back into the state's top flight — a result credited to coach Jilmerly Alves, brought in from outside the club rather than raised through it. Among the names attached to Velo Clube's history are forward Tito Livio Maule, who went on to play for Palmeiras and in Italy, and two of the club's leading scorers, Luís Salomão with 120 goals and Antônio Lucatto with 144.

Velo Clube U20 sits inside this same structure as the academy side, competing in the Campeonato Paulista Sub-20 rather than as a club in its own right. It has yet to win that competition, and no graduate of the youth ranks has emerged as a recognised name from the age-group side itself.
