The pitch at Estadio Carlos Ugalde Álvarez is not the one San Carlos supporters walked in on last season. In 2025 the old artificial surface was lifted and replaced with a new one certified to FIFA standards.
That tenant is Asociación Deportiva San Carlos , founded in 1965, a year before the ground opened. The club took first-division football to Barrio San Martín from the start: in 1966, San Carlos lost to Cartaginés.
The name arrived later. Since 1975 the ground has carried that of Carlos Ugalde Álvarez , a former president of the San Carlos municipality who also served as a director of the football federation.
It is occasionally written as "Municipal Carlos Ugalde Álvarez", though the "Municipal" marks who owns it rather than forming part of the name.
