Estadio Coyella Fonseca

Formerly: Estadio Municipal Goicoechea, Estadio CDI José Joaquín "Colleya" Fonseca

What sets the Coyella Fonseca apart is that it doubles as a neutral venue when the country's biggest rivalry needs a home. Herediano and Saprissa have both used it to settle gran final ties — in the Clausura 2021, the Apertura 2023 and the Clausura 2023.

The ground began life in the 1970s as a modest municipal pitch with wooden stands and natural grass, home to Municipal Goicoechea. It fell into disrepair through the early 2000s before a business group called Icono rebuilt it almost from scratch between 2007 and 2009 — new stands, floodlights, a cooling system for the turf and, in place of the old natural surface, an artificial pitch. The rebuild also brought the renaming after José Joaquín "Colleya" Fonseca, with the CDI prefix attached to mark the new international-standard status the reconstruction aimed for.

That floodlight system has not always held up under the weight of the occasion. During a Herediano–Saprissa match on 23 February 2023, one of the towers cut out and the game was held up for 40 minutes until a fan with electrical know-how came down from the stands and fixed it himself.

The official capacity sits at 4,500, and men's matches rarely test that ceiling. The record crowd, some 6,820, was set instead at a women's league fixture in 2019 — a reminder that the numbers a ground is built for and the numbers it occasionally draws can tell two different stories.
