The ground sits on a mountainside above Funchal , in the Sítio da Choupana quarter on the northern edge of the city.

It opened on 8 December 1998 , though the first competitive match waited until 13 February 1999. For its first years it carried the name of the Nacional president who pushed the project through, Estádio Eng.º Rui Alves, while everyone in Funchal called it the Choupana after the district. On 1 June 2007 the club agreed with the regional government to rename it Estádio da Madeira, a promotional arrangement for the island. The same year brought the rebuild: capacity lifted from 2,500 to 5,200. The wider Cidade Desportiva complex around it cost the regional government 23 million euros.

C.D. Nacional have played here since 1999 and own the place; União took it on in 2012 after leaving the Barreiros, and Marítimo used it through 2021/22 when their own ground fell short of league requirements.

The European night came on 18 August 2011, a Europa League play-off against Birmingham City that finished goalless in front of around 4,000. Birmingham won the return 3-0.
