Estádio Doutor Hermínio Ometto
Araras, Brazil
The ground carries the name of Dr Hermínio Ometto, founder and former president of União São João, for whom it was purpose-built; before 1988 the club played at Estádio Engenho Grande, in use since 1959. Herminião, as it is known locally, has never carried another name.
Its record crowd came on 28 May 1995, when 21,497 people watched a 1-1 draw with Santos — well above the ground's listed capacity of 16,096, a discrepancy the club has never explained. On 8 December 1996, a draw with Náutico here sent União São João up as Série B champions, with the club's under-20 side taking the São Paulo state title on the same afternoon.
For a stadium of this size, the list of visitors runs unusually wide: Universidad de Guadalajara drew 0-0 in 1990, Fenerbahçe won 4-1 in 1995, and Sporting Cristal drew 1-1 in 2003. In February 1997, a young Rodrigo Ceni, then of São Paulo, scored the first penalty of his goalkeeping career here, in a 2-0 win for the visitors. The ground also staged the football and athletics events, opening ceremony included, of the 1996 Jogos Regionais.
União São João remains the only permanent tenant, and neither club nor stadium runs an official website.
