When the first stone went down on 24 June 1943, the plan was a baseball park; the inauguration on 21 October 1945 opened a football ground holding 11,000. It carries the name of George Capwell, and is known as La Caldera Azul — the blue cauldron — or simply El Chueco .
The first, between 1989 and 1991 under architect Ricardo Mórtola with Nassib Neme directing, was a rescue: a new stand on General Gómez for 4,095, two general terraces of 5,000 each on Pío Montúfar and Avenida Quito, the old San Martín stand restored, and the pitch relaid with drainage, lighting and irrigation. Capacity reached 21,594, and the ground was renamed Nuevo Estadio Capwell.
In December 2018, 34,902 watched them face LDU Quito.
