For decades the pitch at Estadio Luis Franzini sloped. The ground under it had subsided, tipping the playing surface towards the Río de la Plata, until the club levelled it during the rebuilding work of 1997 and 1998. The ground reopened on 16 August 1998, under the name it had carried since the start.
That start came on 31 December 1963, the last day of the year, when the ground opened as the Nuevo Estadio Luis Franzini — the "new" mattering because it replaced the club's older ground. The name honoured Luis Franzini, a former president of the club. The qualifier fell out of use almost immediately; nobody in Montevideo says "Nuevo" now, and the ground is simply the Franzini.
It sits inside the city rather than on its edge, at Julio Herrera y Reissig 687.
